How will physiotherapy, athletic therapy, chiropractic, and massage therapy help me return to my sport?
Our Oakville, ON practitioners are movement experts who can help you recover quickly and reach your ultimate physical goals. They will prescribe an individualized treatment plan for you based on your specific sport needs, in order to help get you back in the game as fast as possible. This will be done after first performing an assessment, and helping you make sense of any diagnostic tests, such as X-rays, MRI, or ultrasound that you may have had. After a thorough physical evaluation is completed, your therapist will prepare your plan of care.
Your treatment plan will take into account the nature of your injury, your fitness level, and your lifestyle. It will likely include a combination of manual therapy to mobilize your muscles and joints, stretching and strengthening exercises, exercises to improve your balance and mobility, and eventually activities to help you recover your full and unimpeded function. Finally, your therapist will spend some time with you working on, or discussing, some practical ways to prevent the same injury in the future.
Common types of sports injuries
There are a number of different injuries that can occur while performing an athletic activity; however, the most common forms of sports injury include:
Knee injuries
Your knee is a complex joint in your body and is, therefore, one of the most commonly injured body parts. Knee injuries may include dull aches that are widespread or sharp pains very local to an area on your knee. They can be repetitive in nature, loaded inappropriately, or something more severe like an ACL tear resulting from a collision on the playing field.
Sprain
A sprain occurs when a ligament connecting one bone to another is stretched beyond its limits. This results in pain and swelling in the initial stages post-injury, and if left unattended, it can result in joint instability. The ankle is the joint most commonly sprained.
Strain or “pulled muscle”
A strain also referred to as a “pulled muscle,” occurs when a muscle or tendon is stretched beyond its limits. Once the tendon is overstretched, there is a period of pain and swelling. A targeted therapy program focused on gradually increasing the strength of the repair will ensure that you get the muscle back to its optimal performance, maybe even better than before!
Tendinitis
Common places for tendinitis, now commonly referred to as tendinopathy, include the shoulder, knee, and ankle. It occurs from the excessive overloading of the tendons, causing them to become inflamed and hypersensitive. The pain associated with tendinitis waxes and wanes depending on your activity level. Working with a sports physiotherapist or sports chiropractor will help you reduce the sensitivity of the tendon and prepare it for the specific loading of your sport.
What caused my sports injury?
The term “sports injury” is all-encompassing, including any type of injury that occurs while performing an athletic activity. It can happen by running in ill-fitted shoes, by swinging a bat too aggressively, rolling your ankle on the soccer field, or trying to push that one last rep at the gym when your body wasn’t ready for it.
One of the most important aspects to rehabilitating a sports injury is early recognition and treating it as soon as possible. Your treatment plan and duration of recovery will vary depending on how severe the injury is, your health history, and whether or not the injury requires surgical intervention.
