If you’re gearing up for orthopedic surgery like a hip replacement or ACL repair, you’ve probably been told that bouncing back will take time. While the initial healing may be quick, regaining full strength and mobility could take up to a year. That’s where post-operative rehabilitation and physiotherapy, come in. These professionals, like the team at Leaps and Bounds Performance Rehabilitation, know their stuff when it comes to movement and your body’s musculoskeletal system. After surgery, getting back on your feet will definitely need some expert guidance.

The Four Phases of Post-Operative Rehabilitation

No one undergoes major surgery and walks out of the hospital unimpeded afterward. A surgical procedure is immensely stressful to your body, and there are many factors your body has to address before you can be considered fully rehabilitated.

When the Leaps and Bounds Performance Rehab physiotherapists work with you to develop a post-surgical rehabilitation plan, we take the phases of rehabilitation into consideration. At each stage, your body works through different “repairs,” and our physiotherapists will suggest approaches and exercises appropriate for each.

  • Starting Fresh (1 Week Post-Surgery): Right after surgery, it’s all about letting the surgical site heal. Managing pain, reducing swelling, and starting gentle movements are key. You might need some assistance moving around during this phase (think walker, crutches, or cane).
  • Healing Continues (2-4 Weeks Post-Surgery): As you move into this phase, outpatient physiotherapy kicks in. Your body is still on the mend, but gentle exercises help decrease stiffness and prepare your muscles for more action.
  • Getting Mobile (4-12 Weeks Post-Surgery): Now it’s time to ramp up the activity. You’ll start doing more active exercises to improve your range of motion. Regular movement is crucial here to prevent future issues.
  • Building Strength (12+ Weeks Post-Surgery): Even though the surgical site is healed, your body still needs work. This phase focuses on strengthening the affected area to get it back to full power and beyond.

Knowing the rehab phases is crucial for a good post-surgery physio plan. Each phase needs specific exercises, and skipping any of these can delay recovery or even cause harm.
