Dealing with knee pain can be a constant struggle, affecting your daily activities and overall quality of life. Fortunately, there is hope. Physical therapy for knee pain (i.e. physiotherapy, chiropractic, or athletic therapy) offers several solutions to manage, or even, resolve this discomfort.

When it comes to managing knee pain, physical therapy offers a unique benefit: it addresses the source of your discomfort rather than merely masking your symptoms. The team at Leaps and Bounds Performance Rehab will always begin with a thorough assessment to pinpoint the injury or condition causing pain. From there, we’ll create a treatment program tailored to address it.

Whether you’re dealing with arthritis, a sports injury, or post-surgical pain, physical therapy can help. Strengthening the muscles around your knee provides support and helps prevent future injuries. Mobility exercises improve your range of motion, making everyday movements easier and more comfortable. We can also help manage acute pain so you can work through your program more easily.

What Causes Knee Pain?

At Leaps and Bounds Performance Rehab, we understand that the first step in addressing your knee pain is finding out what’s causing it. Here are some of the most common causes. Physiotherapy for knee pain can help with all of them.

Osteoarthritis

  • Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage in your knee breaks down over time, a normal process that many people exeperience. Sometimes (but not always) it can produce stiffness in the joint, or be a source of pain during activity. While the condition has no cure, regular physical activity and targeted exercises help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Patellar Tendinitis

  • Patellar tendinitis, often called “jumper’s knee,” is a common sports injury. It involves inflammation of the tendon connecting the kneecap to the shinbone. Symptoms include pain and tenderness at the base of the kneecap, especially during activities like jumping or running.

Meniscus Tears

  • The meniscus is a ring of cartilage between your thigh bone and your shin bone that helps manage forces through your knee. A meniscus tear is usually a sports injury that occurs when the knee is twisted or rotated forcefully, leading to either a partial or complete tear in your meniscus. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the knee.

Ligament Injuries

  • Ligament injuries, such as ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tears, tend to affect athletes or active people who make frequent sudden stops or changes in direction. Symptoms include a popping sensation at the time of the injury, severe pain, swelling, and instability.

Bursitis

  • Knee bursitis occurs when the small fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the knee joint become inflamed. Symptoms include swelling, warmth, and pain, particularly when kneeling.

Manage Your Knee Pain with Physical Therapy

Once we understand why you’re experiencing knee pain, we’ll develop your treatment plan. We tailor every plan to suit your specific needs. For example, an athlete recovering from a jumper’s knee will have different needs than an older person living with osteoarthritis. That’s why we want to find the best program for you.

To do that, we’ll pull from several proven interventions to create a truly customized program. Here are just some of the techniques we might incorporate:

Manual Therapy

  • These hands-on techniques can help reduce pain, improve circulation, and enhance mobility.

Mobility Work

  • Targeted exercises help address the underlying causes of knee pain. We’ll start with simple exercises to improve the range of motion in your knee, making it easier to perform daily activities.

Strengthening Exercises

  • These exercises focus on building the muscles around your knee to provide better support and reduce stress on the joint. Strengthening the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calf muscles can significantly improve knee stability and function.

Balance and Proprioception Training

  • Proprioception training aims to improve your body’s awareness of its position in space, which is crucial for preventing falls and injuries. Balance training helps improve your balance overall through personalized balance challenges (such as walking heel-to-toe).
